Chris Bessei, currently leading the German PG XC league standard class and second placed in the XContest, explains why he flies far and especially how to fly far. The basics of cross-country flying, presented by last year’s German champion.
More than 200 kilometres, three turnpoints, one mountain: on Sunday the 19th of April, eight NOVA pilots flew FAI triangles of more than 200km from the Grente (South Tyrol). Seven of them were flying MENTORS.
A group of professional test pilots explore the remote and rarely visited island of Socotra off the coast of Yemen in the heart of the Middle East. Join them as they thermal up to 1000 meter over the Indian Ocean, battle 40km winds, and fly from the longest caves in the orient.
During their annual Pilots Team Meeting held in Lermoos (Austria), NOVA awarded five pilots as “Pilots of the Year 2014”. The awards went to Berni Pessl, Tomy Hofbauer and Vera Polaschegg (Austria). German junior pilots Timon Weber and Luca Bayer may call themselves “Newcomers of the Year”.
More technology, more know-how, more performance: the MENTOR 4 (EN B, TBC) is the next milestone in the XC intermediate class. As well as improving its performance across the whole polar curve, the Mentor 4 also offers refined handling in thermals, balanced roll damping and even better climb characteristics.
Just in time for the hike & fly season we would like to present the ION 3 light. It is a fully-fledged ION 3, but it is nearly one and a half kilograms lighter. It has the same basic philosophy: the wing offers a lot and demands little. The ION 3 light performs well, is uncomplicated and offers a high degree of passive safety.
A wing that soars above its class: the TRITON 2. In terms of requirements the TRITON 2 is similar to the old DHV 2-3 class – and at the same time it has the performance of a fully-fledged high-end glider. This makes the TRITON 2 the ultimate cross-country flying machine.
In June 2014, 26 year old Berni Peßl from Styria (Austria) was the first pilot to complete a 300+ km FAI triangle on an EN B paraglider (Nova Mentor 3). In July he completed another XC hat-trick, flying 687 km in three days. Read his report about his 30 hours of happiness and satisfaction.
